Copyright & licensing
Quote us, link to us, cite us — that needs no permission. Republishing wholesale, or training a model on our archive, needs a licence.
What you may do without asking
- Quote and cite. Take a reasonable extract for reporting, comment, criticism, teaching or research, with attribution to ProvenBrief and a link to the story. Every story page carries a ready-made citation you can copy.
- Link freely, including deep links to any story, tracker or data study. We never require a link to be nofollowed and we do not gate anything behind a paywall.
- Cite our data studies in your own work, including commercially. They exist to be cited; that is the whole point of maintaining them.
- Machine-read us to cite us. Search engines and answer engines that attribute and link are welcome. See llms.txt.
What needs a licence
- Republication in full or in substantial part, in any medium, including translation.
- Bulk download, scraping or mirroring of the site or the archive.
- Using our content to train, fine-tune, benchmark or evaluate a machine-learning model. Our robots.txt names the crawlers this applies to, and honouring it is a condition of access.
- Reusing our artwork on its own, separate from the story it illustrates.
Licensing is not a formality designed to say no — write to partners@provenbrief.com and say what you want to do. Non-commercial and academic use is usually a yes.
Our name and marks
“ProvenBrief”, the hallmark device and the masthead are ours. You may use the name to refer to us — in a citation, a link, a news story about us — but not in a way that implies we endorse, produced or verified something we did not. Do not use the hallmark as your own site's favicon or app icon.
Third-party material we use
Story artwork is generated for us and is ours. Where a story quotes or reproduces someone else's material, it does so under quotation and fair-dealing principles, attributed to the source and linked. Our reference lists name every source a story drew on; if a link is dead or points to the wrong place, that is an error we want to fix — write to corrections@provenbrief.com.
If you think we have infringed your copyright
Tell us and we will look at it properly. Send a notice to hello@provenbrief.com with the subject line Copyright notice, including:
- the URL on ProvenBrief of the material you are complaining about;
- identification of your work, and where it can be seen;
- your contact details;
- a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and that the information in your notice is accurate;
- your signature, electronic or physical.
We aim to acknowledge within two business days and to act — remove, license, or explain why we believe the use is permitted — rather than let a notice sit. If we remove something and we were wrong to, we will say so publicly, because a silent deletion is its own kind of error.
Please do not use this address for corrections of fact — those go to corrections@provenbrief.com and are handled under our editorial standards, usually faster.
Counter-notice
If your material was removed after a notice and you believe that was a mistake or the use was authorised, write to the same address with the URL, your contact details and why you believe the removal was wrong. We will restore anything we should not have taken down.
