Cursor launches $7/month India plan as SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition nears close

Cursor's $7 India Plan Skips OpenAI and Anthropic. That's the SpaceX $60 Billion Bet.

Cursor just launched a subscription tier in India for 649 rupees a month, about $7. That's roughly a third of its $20 Pro plan. But the price isn't the story. The story is what the plan leaves out: frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Cursor Start runs on its own Composer 2.5 model and xAI's Grok 4.5 instead 1.

Every AI coding tool that routes requests through OpenAI or Anthropic APIs pays a per-token fee to those model providers. Cursor's India plan sidesteps that cost entirely.

SpaceX agreed to buy the AI coding startup in an all-stock deal in June, following its IPO, with the transaction expected to close this quarter 1. The two companies had been partnered since April on next-generation coding and knowledge work AI 1. What SpaceX is acquiring is a coding platform that controls its own model economics and can enter new markets at a fraction of Western pricing.

India is the test case. It's Cursor's third-largest market globally and home to its highest concentration of power users, with the user base more than tripling over the past year 1. GitHub counts more than 27 million developers in India, second only to the U.S., with over two million joining in 2026 alone 1. Cursor Start includes cloud agents, the iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol support, hooks, skills, and higher usage limits than the free tier. What it drops is access to frontier models such as those from OpenAI and Anthropic, plus advanced features including Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK 1. Billed in rupees, the plan supports payments through India's Unified Payments Interface as well as credit and debit cards, with VPN deterrents and geo-checks to keep it country-specific 1.

Cursor is also staffing up on the ground: a first salesperson in India, an incoming leader in Delhi, a government affairs office, and technical support hires across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai 1. Enterprise adoption is still early, driven mainly by individual developers, startups, and universities, with banking and large enterprises as growth targets 1.

OpenAI and Anthropic have each rolled out India-specific plans over the past year. OpenAI's ChatGPT Go launched at under $5 before expanding to other markets 1. The structural difference matters: those plans still serve requests through frontier models their own companies built and maintain. Cursor's plan works because it deliberately avoids that cost structure.

Once the acquisition closes, Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, said SpaceX's existing India presence through Starlink could help Cursor expand faster by lowering commercial and operational barriers 1. Starlink's regulatory and physical footprint gives SpaceX a distribution channel that most software companies spend years establishing. Green also said the pricing model could expand to other markets if it proves successful 1.

If it does, the competitive math shifts. A $7 tier built on proprietary models means Cursor can enter any emerging market at a price point that competitors paying per-token fees to frontier model providers cannot match. The constraint on AI coding tool adoption in price-sensitive markets was never the technology. It was the cost of renting intelligence from someone else's infrastructure.

Cursor just removed that constraint for itself. For competitors still paying the frontier-model tax, the question is how long they can hold their prices above $7 before the gap forces them to build their own models or cede the market.
