OpenAI quietly acquired a presentation startup months ago. The announcement just landed.

OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, a startup that turns text prompts into editable presentation decks, with the full team now working on ChatGPT. Founder Ahmed Beshry disclosed the deal on August 8 but said on LinkedIn that the announcement was coming "a few months late" because the acquisition closed "earlier this year." 1 Financial terms were not disclosed. 1

The acquisition extends a three-year expansion of what ChatGPT can produce without the user leaving the conversation:

• July 2023: Code Interpreter launched for ChatGPT Plus, letting the model write and run code. 2
• October 2023: DALL-E 3 brought image generation into the same interface. 3
• December 2024: Sora added video generation as a standalone product. 4
• August 2026: NextSlide's team joins OpenAI to work on ChatGPT. 5

The cadence matters. Images followed three months later. Video took fourteen more months. But in April 2026, OpenAI discontinued Sora, its standalone video generation product, telling the BBC it wanted to focus on areas like robotics instead. 6 Four months later, NextSlide was announced. The platform stumbled on one creative medium and kept expanding into the next.

NextSlide's run was short, and it fits a pattern

NextSlide was founded "just over a year ago," placing its launch around mid-2025. 5 If the acquisition closed in spring 2026 and was announced August 8, the company operated independently for under a year before OpenAI absorbed its team. Beshry described the product as one that could turn "prompts, notes, documents, or research into a polished, editable presentation." 1

This is Beshry's second exit to a platform company. He previously co-founded Caper AI, a Y Combinator-backed smart-cart and cashier-less checkout startup that Instacart acquired in 2021. 1 5 Both deals followed the same arc: a small team builds a focused product, and a platform that already owns the user relationship absorbs the technology rather than competing with it.

Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Canva all assumed users would open a dedicated application to create visual content. ChatGPT removes that assumption. The user is already in a conversation, and the deck generates from the same prompt that started the discussion. Beshry said the NextSlide team would continue "building AI products that help people create, communicate, and turn their ideas into meaningful work" at OpenAI. 1

Canva, valued at $42 billion in an August 2025 employee share sale, built its advantage on design templates and drag-and-drop simplicity. 7 That position assumes the user arrives at Canva to start designing. ChatGPT with NextSlide starts one step earlier: the user is already there, mid-conversation, when the need for a deck arises. Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint sit inside productivity suites that require a separate application and a separate workflow from the research or writing that precedes the presentation. ChatGPT collapses those steps into a single text box.

The competitive pressure runs in one direction. A dedicated presentation tool can add AI features to its existing interface, but it cannot match the friction advantage of a product that is already open on the user's screen. For builders and investors, the implication is concrete: the conversational interface is becoming the default entry point for creative work, and every productivity tool that assumed it would own that first interaction now competes with a chat window that can produce a finished deck from a sentence.
