When Do ChatGPT Credits Reset? Every Reset Window and Credit Rule, Per Plan

ChatGPT usage resets on rolling windows, not one monthly date. Included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex refreshes automatically on a 5-hour window inside a weekly window 1. A paid instant reset restores both windows immediately and starts a fresh weekly period at your first request 2. OpenAI spreads these rules across separate Help Center articles, and no single one of them prints the whole clock. This page does, along with the prices that decide whether paying for a reset beats upgrading. One distinction does most of the work: included usage is what resets, credits are what you buy, and they are different currencies. Personal plans can purchase both instant resets, which restore the included windows 2, and flexible credits, which extend usage beyond those windows 5. Banked resets are a third thing: one-time resets saved to your account until you use them or they expire, and they are not purchased credit 4.

Two windows for Plus and Pro, a balance for Business

Work is OpenAI's separate ChatGPT experience for longer research and deliverable tasks, and Codex is its coding agent; for personal plans both run on the same usage clock 6. What resets, and when, depends on which surface you are using and which plan pays for it:

• The Work and Codex 5-hour window refreshes automatically, and heavy requests can exhaust it before five full hours have passed, even with weekly usage remaining 1.
• The Work and Codex weekly window spans 168 hours, seven days, and caps how much included usage you can spend across those 5-hour stretches 1.
• A paid instant reset carries a wait of 0 hours: the completed purchase immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage 2.
• A full banked reset also works in 0 hours, refreshing your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changing your weekly reset date 4.
• ChatGPT Business purchased credits carry no reset window: credits are valid for 12 months, 8,760 hours on a 365-day year, from purchase 3.
• Enterprise and Edu workspaces buy committed shared credit pools instead: monthly per-user usage limits, plus a workspace overage limit that governs what can happen after the shared pool is exhausted 7.

What a paid reset actually buys: next week's allowance, early

A paid reset is not bonus usage. A completed purchase immediately restores both the 5-hour and weekly allowance, and the new weekly usage period starts with your first Work or Codex request after the reset is applied, regardless of any remaining allowance 2. You are buying your own next week, early. Two consequences follow. The reset does not wait for your remaining allowance, so buying one while the week is still fresh discards the remainder 2. And a purchase cannot be banked or scheduled for later; it applies the moment it completes 2. Customers on ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans can buy an instant reset from Usage settings in ChatGPT Desktop before reaching a limit, or from the in-app limit message 2.

Reporting on the feature under test put the button at $8, from a user screenshot of a "Pay $8 to reset" prompt after a maxed-out weekly quota 8. Run that against the plan itself. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month 9, and a 30-day month holds about 4.3 weekly windows, so each included week costs roughly $4.65 of the subscription. An $8 reset buys one extra week at about 1.7 times the bundled rate. Buy one every week and exhaust both windows each time, and you are paying roughly $54 a month for approximately double the weekly usage, already more than half of Pro's $100 tier 10. Banked resets are saved refreshes, not credit

A banked reset is a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires; it is not purchased credit 4. OpenAI minted the current supply during the GPT-6 Astra launch: on Sep 3, 2026 and Sep 4, 2026, resets were offered to eligible existing Plus, Pro and Business subscribers in good standing 4. Using a full banked reset refreshes both windows and moves your weekly reset date, so the same freshness warning applies: do not spend one while the week is still fresh 4.

Business credits never reset, they reload

Business users receive per-seat limits for advanced features; when a user exceeds a limit and the workspace holds credits, eligible usage continues on the balance 11. Workspace owners add credits by picking an amount and confirming the payment method, and credits are valid for 12 months 3. Automatic reload prevents interruptions by charging the payment method when the balance falls below a set Minimum balance 3. Seats set the included allowance: for most countries, pricing is in USD, and a Standard seat costs $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually, and includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex at a fixed per-user cost 12. A Premium seat costs $125 per user per month, or $100 billed annually, and includes 5x more usage than Standard 12. Which models burn the balance fastest changes as the catalog moves; OpenAI points workspaces to the model picker and the current rate card rather than a fixed table 13.

Enterprise and Edu buy pools, not windows

Enterprise and Edu admins stack three controls: usage limits set through workspace defaults, group defaults and individual overrides, governing each person's usage during the selected usage period; a workspace overage limit governing what can happen after the shared pool is exhausted; and analytics to monitor shared credits 7.

Where to find your own reset time

Settings → Usage shows your current windows and reset times, and it is where OpenAI tells you to check after any reset, because resets move the weekly date 1 6. Paid resets are bought from Usage settings in ChatGPT Desktop or from the in-app limit message 2. Banked counts sit in the profile menu's usage summary 6. What it costs to never wait

Paid ChatGPT plans are priced per user per month 14. The ladder as verified:

• ChatGPT Plus, $20 a month: the base paid tier, with Work and Codex usage on the two windows above and access to paid instant resets 9 2.
• ChatGPT Pro, from $100 a month: the tier above it on the same surfaces; new subscriptions and upgrades to the $200 Pro tier remain paused 10.
• ChatGPT Business, Standard seat at $25 monthly or $20 annual: adds workspace credits, admin spend controls, and per-seat Work and Codex 12.
• Business Premium seat, $125 monthly or $100 annual: adds 5x Standard usage 12.
• ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu: custom contracts on committed shared credit pools 7.

Annual Business billing saves $5 per seat per month, $60 per seat over a year, the only straightforward discount in the ladder 12. Rivals monetize the same wall differently: Cursor sells pay-to-continue once a monthly cap is hit, GitHub Copilot and Replit run comparable plans, and Google sells additional credits on Gemini's AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions 8. OpenAI's reset button is the most literal version of the idea: pay to restart the same clock, rather than buy more of the resource.
