When Do ChatGPT Credits Reset? Every Reset Window and Credit Rule, Per Plan

ChatGPT usage resets on rolling windows, not one monthly date. Included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex refreshes automatically on a 5-hour window inside a weekly window on Plus, while Pro tiers currently run on the weekly window alone 1 2. A paid instant reset restores both windows immediately and starts a fresh weekly period at your first request 3. ChatGPT Business credits never reset: they are a purchased balance that keeps eligible usage running past a workspace's included limits, with automatic reload to a minimum balance you set 4. OpenAI spreads these rules across separate Help Center articles, and no single one of them prints the whole clock. This page does, along with the prices that decide whether paying for a reset beats upgrading. One distinction does most of the work: included usage is what resets, credits are what you buy, and they are different currencies. Personal plans can purchase both instant resets, which restore the included windows 3, and flexible credits, which extend usage beyond those windows 6. Banked resets are a third thing: one-time resets saved to your account until you use them or they expire, and they are not purchased credit 5.

Two windows for Plus, one for Pro, a balance for Business

Work is OpenAI's separate ChatGPT experience for longer research and deliverable tasks, and Codex is its coding agent; for personal plans both run on the same usage clock 7. What resets, and when, depends on which surface you are using and which plan pays for it:

• The Work and Codex 5-hour window refreshes automatically, and heavy requests can exhaust it before five full hours have passed, even with weekly usage remaining 1.
• The Work and Codex weekly window spans 168 hours, seven days, and caps how much included usage you can spend across those 5-hour stretches 1.
• Pro tiers currently run on the weekly window alone: OpenAI's pricing documentation lists no five-hour limit on Pro plans, and OpenAI's Codex team has publicly committed to not reintroducing one 2 8.
• A paid instant reset carries a wait of 0 hours: the completed purchase immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage 3.
• A full banked reset also works in 0 hours, refreshing your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changing your weekly reset date 5.
• ChatGPT Business purchased credits carry no reset window: credits are valid for 12 months, 8,760 hours on a 365-day year, from purchase 4.
• Enterprise and Edu workspaces buy committed shared credit pools instead: monthly per-user usage limits, plus a workspace overage limit that governs what can happen after the shared pool is exhausted 9.

One shared allowance arrives in December

OpenAI has already announced the next change to this clock. Starting in December 2026, Plus, Pro and Business plans move to a single shared usage allowance covering both ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens instead of separate limits, with Instant chat exempt from the pool 10 11. Settings will show combined remaining usage and reset times, and at the cap OpenAI lists three options: wait for the reset, upgrade the plan, or buy credits 10. No exact date and no allowance sizes have been published, and OpenAI says it expects most users will not need to wait for a reset more often than they do now 10. The same week fenced off the stacking workaround: ChatGPT now limits how many paid Go, Plus and Pro accounts one device or payment card can carry, Free, Business, Enterprise and Edu do not count toward it, and OpenAI notes that buying credits or resetting usage will not clear such a restriction 10.

What a paid reset actually buys: next week's allowance, early

A paid reset is not bonus usage. A completed purchase immediately restores both the 5-hour and weekly allowance, and the new weekly usage period starts with your first Work or Codex request after the reset is applied, regardless of any remaining allowance 3. You are buying your own next week, early. Two consequences follow. The reset does not wait for your remaining allowance, so buying one while the week is still fresh discards the remainder 3. And a purchase cannot be banked or scheduled for later; it applies the moment it completes 3. Customers on ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans can buy an instant reset from Usage settings in ChatGPT Desktop before reaching a limit, or from the in-app limit message 3.

Reporting on the feature under test put the button at $8, from a user screenshot of a "Pay $8 to reset" prompt after a maxed-out weekly quota 12. Run that against the plan itself. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month 13, and a 30-day month holds about 4.3 weekly windows, so each included week costs roughly $4.65 of the subscription. An $8 reset buys one extra week at about 1.7 times the bundled rate. Buy one every week and exhaust both windows each time, and you are paying roughly $54 a month for approximately double the weekly usage, already more than half of Pro 100's $100 price, and the Oct 29, 2026 doubling of Pro 100's included Work and Codex allowance tilted that trade further toward the upgrade at no price change 14. Banked resets are saved refreshes, not credit

A banked reset is a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires; it is not purchased credit 5. OpenAI minted a large batch during the GPT-6 Astra launch: on Sep 3, 2026 and Sep 4, 2026, resets were offered to eligible existing Plus, Pro and Business subscribers in good standing 5, and grants have continued since, including banked resets alongside the Sep 22 GPT-6 Sol and Luna launch 15 and fresh banked-reset grants logged by the Codex reset tracker on Oct 31 and Nov 1, 2026 16. They are not immortal: banked resets are usable for 30 days, 720 hours, after they are granted unless the specific offer says otherwise, a window OpenAI printed in its June 11 release notes and repeats in its Help Center for referral-granted resets 17. On that default clock the Sep 3 and Sep 4 grants passed their 30-day mark in early October 2026, so a reset banked at the Astra launch is, on the default terms, already gone. To spend one, open the profile menu and select the usage summary showing the available count, such as "1 reset available" 7. Using a full banked reset refreshes both windows and moves your weekly reset date, so the same freshness warning applies: do not spend one while the week is still fresh 5.

Business credits never reset, they reload

Business users receive per-seat limits for advanced features; when a user exceeds a limit and the workspace holds credits, eligible usage continues on the balance 18. Workspace owners add credits by picking an amount and confirming the payment method, and credits are valid for 12 months 4. Automatic reload prevents interruptions by charging the payment method when the balance falls below a set Minimum balance 4. Seats set the included allowance: for most countries, pricing is in USD, and a Standard seat costs $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually, and includes ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex at a fixed per-user cost 19. A Premium seat costs $125 per user per month, or $100 billed annually, and carries a higher usage allotment than Standard, one OpenAI increased again on Oct 29, 2026 without publishing a per-seat figure 19 14. Which models burn the balance fastest changes as the catalog moves; OpenAI points workspaces to the model picker and the current rate card rather than a fixed table 20.

Enterprise and Edu buy pools, not windows

Enterprise and Edu admins stack three controls: usage limits set through workspace defaults, group defaults and individual overrides, governing each person's usage during the selected usage period; a workspace overage limit governing what can happen after the shared pool is exhausted; and analytics to monitor shared credits 9.

Where to find your own reset time

Settings → Usage shows your current windows and reset times, and it is where OpenAI tells you to check after any reset, because resets move the weekly date 1 7. Paid resets are bought from Usage settings in ChatGPT Desktop or from the in-app limit message 3. Banked counts sit in the profile menu's usage summary 7. What it costs to never wait

Paid ChatGPT plans are priced per user per month 21. The ladder as verified:

• ChatGPT Plus, $20 a month: the base paid tier, with Work and Codex usage on the two windows above and access to paid instant resets 13 3.
• ChatGPT Pro is now a family of three tiers: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 a month, as listed in OpenAI's Pro tiers article on October 1, 2026 8 2. The $200 tier's squeeze never landed: it reopened at DevDay on Sep 29 with a lower Work and Codex allowance, and on Oct 29, the very day the grandfathered allowance was due to end, OpenAI canceled the cut, so subscribers who had the higher allowance keep it, those on the lower one were doubled up to match, and the price stays $200 14 22. Pro 100 and Pro 500 had their Work and Codex allowances doubled the same day at no price change, applied to existing subscribers automatically without waiting for renewal, while the weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat are separate and did not move 14. OpenAI's pages no longer print multiples of the Plus allowance, but on the pre-change published multiples the ladder works out to roughly 10x, 20x and 50x the Plus allowance 14. Pro 500's one exclusive is Ultrafast, a speed tier that now covers GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex, generates up to 8x faster and draws included usage at 8x the Standard rate, where Fast mode draws at 2.5x; OpenAI also cautions that a larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks 14.
• ChatGPT Business, Standard seat at $25 monthly or $20 annual: adds workspace credits, admin spend controls, and per-seat Work and Codex 19.
• Business Premium seat, $125 monthly or $100 annual: adds a higher usage allotment than Standard, increased again on Oct 29, 2026 with no per-seat figure published 19 14.
• ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu: custom contracts on committed shared credit pools 9.

Annual Business billing saves $5 per seat per month, $60 per seat over a year, the only straightforward discount in the ladder 19; Pro, including Pro 500, is billed monthly only, with no annual option 2. Rivals monetize the same wall differently: Cursor sells top-offs to keep going past an included allowance that refreshes weekly 23, GitHub Copilot and Replit run comparable plans, and Google sells additional credits on Gemini's AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions 12. OpenAI's reset button is the most literal version of the idea: pay to restart the same clock, rather than buy more of the resource.
